Hey doods. Me here again! I thought I’d show a little more of how I go about retaking references if I want to redo some area in a painting.

I am in the earlier stages of a long rehaul of Pettin’ da Fish. It started as a quick (15 hour) painting that I’ve since got a lot of feedback on (thanks especially to Daniel for the crits). Since uploading on dA, I’ve upscaled, detailed, and reconfigured some things. But I think the best way is to show so far what I’m up to.

So let’s go!

Now we get to the fun stuff.

My new WIP, with most of the changes in place, but without the hand, which needs a reference:

So you see, so far I’ve done a rough repaint of the basic background, messed with her body a bit, and extended the canvas… some of the face has been worked over, but most of it will be painted yet again.

Now comes the tricky part… retaking references.

The original reference for this painting was by fetishfaerie-stock on deviantART.

But it no longer has good hand information, since the hand needs to seem more web-like and less web-on-human like.

So for this, I take my own hand pictures! I also take pictures of a different eye direction, in case I want to try that out too. Today I finally got to take pictures before Emmie went to work.

The above two are the best ones I think. These refs should go a long way in helping me paint the hand I hope, but if not, I’ll be takin’ more. I’ve still got some ways to go on this painting before it’s done.
